Formalisms is an exhibition that explores the relationship between language, form and technology. Specifically, Swanson's work begins with inquiries and concepts found in structural and post-structural studies and then transforms and re-presents those ideas through his own explorations in conceptual art.

Joel Swanson is an artist and writer who is the Director of the Technology, Arts & Media Program at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He teaches courses on digital art, media theory, and design. He received his MFA in digital art at the University of California, San Diego. His art work is motivated by literary theory and exists as a series of installations, both real and virtual, that explore the nature of language and its embodiment. Swanson's work has been shown in various national and international venues. His work can be seen online at joelswanson.net.
