Featuring a private screening of the Academy Award winning documentary
"SAVING FACE"

Private docent tour of
"OFF THE BEATEN PATH: VIOLENCE, WOMEN AND ART"

Every year in Pakistan, many people — the majority of them women — are known to be victimized by brutal acid attacks, while numerous other cases go unreported. SAVING FACE chronicles the lives of Zakia and Rukhsana as they attempt to bring their assailants to justice and move on with their lives. The women are supported by NGOs, sympathetic policymakers, and skilled doctors.

AJWS has partnered with grassroots organizations in Pakistan since 2005. In addition to providing emergency relief to women, religious and sexual minorities affected by the 2005 earthquake and 2010 floods, AJWS has worked to promote women's rights and land rights. Our partners have empowered women to organize and access employment, built youth leadership and campaigned for land ownership.

Exhibition curated by Rian Kerrane

August 11 – September 30, 2012

Initiated by Rian Kerrane, a native of Ireland, Hybrid asks fourteen artists to “cross
over”. The artists’ work examines the experience of crossing
the Atlantic in the current political climate while acknowledging historic
influences from each artist’s perspective; identifying experiences of
(dis)placement and immersion in cultural and social surroundings from either
side of the Atlantic. RedLine provides the first venue for a pair of
exhibitions, the second of which will take place in Ireland, allowing each
artist to engage both with “local” proximity and “foreign” distance in turn.

The wide range of included media and the diverse origins of the
participants are intended to incite a stimulating translation and critical
examination of ongoing cultural conversations and personal experiences of the hybridization of our lives, expectations, ancestral backgrounds, geology,
perceptions, identities, of immigration, and of both the geographic distance
and human commonality of the artists.

Shaped by Kerrane’s personal ties with the included artists, Hybrid emerges from a reflective process
of curatorial matchmaking. Working in sculpture, painting, drawing,
photography, film and installation, the works of these two groups of artists
both mirror and confront one another. Hybrid
acknowledges and pays tribute to complex local experiences in a common global
culture, reflecting Kerrane’s eighteen years of continually (re)crossing the
Atlantic.

The seven artists from
Ireland are Lizzie Kinsella, Mark Joyce, James
Hayes, Sara Lewtas, Ian Gordon, Aisling O’ Beirn, and Deirdre O’ Mahony. Seven
Artists from the United States are Rian Kerrane, Eric Waldemar, Viviane
LeCourtois, Christopher R. Perez, Homare Ikeda, Lee Lee, and Melissa Borman.

Public Reception: January 28, 7-9pm

Artist Talk: February 17, 6-8pm

Known as the godfather of Chinese video art, WANG Gongxin's first solo exhibition in the United States will be on display at RedLine this January. WANG Gongxin is one of China’s earliest and most influential video artists and his innovative conceptual videos reveal a deeply personal critique of contemporary life in China today. Organized by the Asian Art Coordinating Council and curated by Dr. Julie Seagraves, this exhibitoin will feature four video installations by Wang - My Sun, Always Welcome, Forward, and It's About Ya. Ranging from 2-18 screens per piece, this vanguard exhibition will bring visitors through an immersive video experience that explores the artist's reflections on contemporary and past chinese culture. Seagraves explains, "Wang’s featured exhibit pieces are mid career examples as well as recent work. All are intense video installations, flawless in execution, and compelling in presentation. Each video installation has a different emotive quality, and the exhibit takes the viewer though a wide range of emotions. Although Wang’s videos are personal statements about China, in reality they deal with universal issues that all viewers can relate to and have their own personal interpretations."

In addition to the exhibition, RedLine & The Asian Art Coordinating Council will co-sponsor an artist talk with Wang on Friday, February 17th from 6-8pm. This event is free and open to the public.

The primary inspirational source and content of my artwork has centered around gift economies and the cultural and biological methods by which we regulate and maintain our social relationships. Exploring as direct, as intimate a relationship to audience members as I can, I create sculptural installations, conceptual performances and evolving relational projects. Often these include such elements as those of gender-specific experiences: hand-knitting and needlework techniques, arduously created and intended expressly for the dedication to a loved person. I also employ natural media, such as pheromones, heat and electricity, which are intended to enact human intimate association. My intent is to explore the unique resonance between organisms and the manners in which they embody the concepts of distribution and networks. The flavor of the work is often manipulative and sentimental.

* * *

Rebecca Vaughan has exhibited sculptural installations, mixed media relational and conceptual projects in the Colorado region, New York, Los Angeles, Mexico and Canada. Publications include the Chicago Art Journal and KnitKnit. Ms. Vaughan has also received state grants from the Colorado Council on the Arts and Humanities and the Ohio Arts Council. Her research centers on gift economies and the cultural and biological methods by which we regulate and maintain our social relationships. Her work explores the unique resonance between organisms and the manners in which they embody the concepts of distribution and networking.
EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION & PARTICIPATING ARTISTS (Program Schedule Below)

RedLine is pleased to announce a traveling
exhibition organized by Art Works For Change entitled Off The Beaten Path: Violence, Women and Art. This exhibit, which
brings together the work of internationally known contemporary artists, fosters
awareness of the problem of gender-based violence. Randy Rosenberg, curator of the
Oakland-based organization Art Works for Change, will work in concert with
Elissa Auther to coordinate the exhibit at RedLine. According to Rosenberg, the
intent of the show is:

to promote awareness of gender-based violence; inspire
the belief that communities can change a culture of violence; empower girls and
women with respect to domestic violence, exploitation and discrimination; and
address systems for broader social change.

Twenty-six artists will be curated in
RedLine’s main exhibition space, with the addition of two adjacent shows in
RedLine’s Project Space. The first of the two adjacent shows, Notes on Feeling, will feature Denver-based
artists, RedLine’s Resident and Resource Artists, as well as RedLine’s Founder
Laura Merage. The second show will be a solo exhibition by New York-based
photographer Corinne-May Botz. This exhibition will include works from her recent photographic
series The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained
Death and Haunted Houses. In
these works, Botz explores the dark side of domestic space through alluring
photographs of dollhouse crime scene dioramas and real homes shared by
residents and ghostly spirits.

All three shows will be thematically and aesthetically
braided together by five themes: Violence and the Individual; Violence and the
Family; Violence and the Community; Violence and Culture; Violence and
Politics.

Opening Reception: December 10, 2-4pm

RedLine’s Educational Partnership Initiative for the Creative (EPIC) Arts program provides a platform for RedLine Resident Artists to work in collaboration with educators from Denver area K-12 schools to implement an experiential curriculum that creates a body of artwork through a lens of contemporary social justice. Through the partnership, artist and educator team up to create a new way of delivering instruction that combines artistic practice with the instructional and learning needs of the teacher and her/his students. EPIC Arts empowers young people to become active interpreters within their own unique art practice alongside a professional artist both in and outside of the classroom. The art making process and resulting artwork becomes a medium through which young people can hone their critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills and express their unique perspective and ideas about today’s world.
