Artist Event & Exhibition Roundup: August 2022

At RedLine, we don’t love the beginning of August just because it kicks off Leo season (although who couldn’t use that extra boost of fire?). We love it because it’s almost time for our annual arts & social justice summit, 48 Hours: Roots Radical!

From August 12-13, join us at RedLine for two days of Indigenous-led artist talks, performances, workshops, readings, art markets, live music, dancing, food trucks, and more!

And while we hope you see you at 48 Hours, we don’t want to steal the spotlight from our amazing RedLine Resident Artists & Alumni who are doing all kinds of cool things this month — from documentary screenings to solo exhibitions.

Here are our top 5 August events you don’t want to miss.

This experimental film is based on the only recorded interview Roscina did with her—Seed Summer Tomb investigates temporal echoes, maternal cycles, the metamorphosis of the female body, changing forms of energy, and the thresholds of consciousness.

About the Artist: Eileen Roscina Richardson is an artist, chef and naturalist from Denver, Colorado who works in a wide variety of mediums. Eileen is an experimental filmmaker with a BFA from Emerson College in Boston, MA, a botanical illustrator, trained at the School of Botanical Art and Illustration in Denver, CO, and a Natural Food Chef, trained at Nutritional Therapy Institute. Through biomimicry and the study of biophilia, her work examines and seeks to raise questions about human’s spiritual and social (dis)connection with nature.

Tony Ortega - Surrounding Kahlo: Works from the Permanent Collection Group Exhibition

About the exhibition: The visage of Frida Kahlo has become the most instantly recognizable of all artists across time. Since her popularization in the 1980’s, she has been the subject of books, movies, an opera and a great deal of visual art created by others who have been moved by her paintings and life story. Drawn entirely from the Museum’s Permanent Collection, this exhibit explores works inspired by Frida Kahlo; the work of her students, known as “Los Fridos,” who learned from and surrounded her while she recovered at home in La Casa Azul; as well as familiar items that Kahlo chose to surround herself with such as arte popular, Mesoamerican artifacts and traditional clothing from her beloved Mexico. Curated by Rebecca D. Meyers.

About the artist: Tony Ortega has been a working artist and teacher for the past 36 years.  He is the recipient of the coveted Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts (1999) and the Mayor's Award for Excellence in the Arts (1998). Tony Ortega’s lifelong goal is to contribute to a better understanding of cultural diversity by addressing the culture, history and experiences of Chicanos/Latinos through his art. His work can be found in the Denver Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum, and the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center. He has exhibited extensively in the United States, Latin America and other parts of the world.
