About the exhibition: Smoke & Mirrors is a group show highlighting optical illusions made by eight artists from a wide range of reflective materials and uncommon methodologies. The artwork on view ignites our irresistible attraction to the elusive materiality of shiny and transparent objects that often serve as distractions or distortions of our physical reality.
About the artist: Rochelle Johnson was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, where she discovered her passion for drawing at an early age. As a child, she discovered the work of Lois Mailou Jones and Jacob Lawrence and was further inspired by the Denver Black Arts Festival in the 1980s. In 1989, Johnson enrolled at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design where she learned to create stories using oils and watercolors. She attained a degree in Illustration. Today, Johnson continues to develop her unique style of story-telling through painting from her Denver studio and has also added to her accomplishment as curator.|

Yazz Atmore - Crossroads Solo Exhibition
What: Solo Exhibition
Where: Alto Gallery - 1900 35th St Suite B, Denver, CO 80216
When: January 3 - February 1, 2025
About the exhibition: It’s known across the African diaspora and within African Traditional Religions that different spirits play at the crossroads. It’s believed these spirits dabble between the spiritual world and physical, opening and closing roads for everyone and anyone that wishes to pass through.
This show is an ode to these trippy relationships and experiences I have with these spirits at these “Crossroads.” From making deals, negotiating with these tricksters, and trusting my path, these pieces are offerings to the wild, crazy, and twisted adventures I continue to explore and embrace as I work my way back home to self.
About the artist: Yazz Atmore Having created her own degree from Metropolitan State University, Yazz obtains a BA in Supporting High Risk Youth through the Arts. As an expressionist intuitive mixed media artist she creates breathtaking hand cut collage works, with the use of bright bold colors, metallic paints and gold leaf.
Yazz is a community organizer, creative & educator in Denver, Colorado where she continues to mentor and create with young artists as they explore their lives, stories, and passions through the beauty of art. Constantly inspired by the youth + community she works with, Yazz continues to develop & deepened her own artistry as an analog collagist and muralist. Her work is heavily influenced by her spiritual journey as she loves exploring the spirit world with God, Ancestors & her Spirit Team.
