WHAT

As part of RedLine’s Roots Radical exhibition program, RedLine and Ciudad Reina present Una Historia de la Cumbia!, an event honoring the cultural giant that is the cumbia.

Featuring KUVO’s Super Sonido host La Molly and El Jaguar hailing from Oaxaca, MX, the evening kicks off with an interactive historical overview of the cumbia, from its beginnings to today.

Following the presentation, local cultural icon Magally Rizo Luna will lead a dance class to be followed by a cumbia party from 8-9 PM.

Expect to be surprised and enchanted by music selections highlighting old favorites to bizarre and modern interpretations of everyone’s favorite rhythm, Cumbia!

Free for members, $5 suggested donation for non-members. This is a family-friendly event.

About Ciudad Reina

Ciudad Reina, a Denver arts collaborative, was formed in 2022 to speak to Denver’s large and often overlooked Latine population, including them in the artistic heartbeat of this city.

Taking its name from a Spanish translation of Denver’s nickname “Queen City of the Plains,” Ciudad Reina looks to bring musicians from all over the world into some of Denver’s favorite local haunts, simultaneously showing off the vibrant and thriving Latine neighborhoods throughout the city.

About the Roots Radical exhibition program at RedLine

Every year, RedLine hosts exhibitions within a social justice-focused Exhibition Program. Our 2022-2023 Exhibition Program is titled Roots Radical: An Exploration into Indigenous Ancestry and Experience.

Roots Radical explores the dislocation of Indigenous identities from Indigenous persons, and how perceptions of Indigeneity are often formed by dominant or white-supremacist narratives and perceptions vs. the realities and experiences of thriving, living cultures.

Roots Radical supports Native-led organizations and artists, and the deeper exploration of our communities’ collective ancestry and Indigenous histories.
