Fitz J. Lewis (b. 1983, Mark Joseph Fitzsimmons) is a Denver based interdisciplinary performance artist. Working with the concepts surrounding social performance that requires the the suffering of others to be maintained. Performing in a manner that interrupts the flow of public spaces, co-opts existing architectural structures, and is accentuated by wearable sculptures to punctuate their intended messages. In June, 2018, Lewis was hospitalized after an 11:30 hour attempt to travel 22 miles by foot around Denver’s Civic Center Park and the Colorado State Capitol Building, carrying a 100-pound weighted American Flag. Lewis was Honorably Discharged from the Army in 2014, holds a BFA from the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Fine Art, and an MFA from the University of Kansas in Expanded Media. Their work has been included in solo shows at CORE Art Space Annex and Dateline, with group shows in Friend of a Friend, Birdseed Collective and RULE Gallery.
