Artist Event & Exhibition Roundup: February 2023

February is the shortest month of the year, but at RedLine, there’s never a shortage of events, exhibitions, or activities to fill your calendar!

Plan a visit to explore Gravitropic: RedLine’s Annual Resident Artist Exhibition, on display through March 1st. See the work of diverse, dynamic work of new Resident Artists and Alumni!

We also have some bookish announcements to share this month. An illustrated, full-color, hardcover book featuring a comprehensive collection of drawings by former RedLine Resource artist Charles (Chuck) Parson has just been published. That’s very exciting news for this accomplished artist!

And for those who are eager to thumb through some thoughtful pages and discuss ideas with even more thoughtful people, we’re hosting our first Roots Radical Book Club. Local poet and professor Crisosto Apache will graciously lead two-part guided exploration into contemporary Indigenous literature, with conversations taking place in-person at RedLine.

Learn more about the Roots Radical Book Club and register here! >

Finally, we look forward to celebrating our fifteen year anniversary in a grand fashion with a retrospective exhibition at the MCA Denver! Join us for the opening reception of Breakthroughs: A Celebration of RedLine at 15 on February 24th.

As winter rolls on, remember to stay warm and get inspired by art and conversation around the city. Here are 5 February exhibitions and achievements featuring our Resident Artist Alumni!

Lares Feliciano - Portals of Theseus Solo Exhibition

angel numbers. 2022. digital collage

What: Portals of Theseus
Where: Meow Wolf - Galleri Gallery — 1338 1st St. Denver, CO, 80204
When: January 7 - March 31, 2023

About the exhibition: “Meow Wolf is honored to host Denver-based interdisciplinary artist Lares Feliciano’s collection of work, Portals of Theseus, which will be available for viewing and purchase until the end of March. Feliciano uses collage, installation, and animation to create worlds where all of time exists at once, bringing marginalized experiences front and center. Her films are screened worldwide, and her visual art has been exhibited in New York and across Colorado. Her latest collection at Galleri Gallery on C Street is a meta-commentary on the medium of collage itself…and can even reveal something about ourselves.

“Portals of Theseus is an exhibition of digital and hand-cut collage work by Lares Feliciano printed on and framed in aluminum. The title of the show refers to The Ship of Theseus, a thought experiment based on the Greek myth that poses the question ‘If an object has had all of its original components replaced over time, does it remain the same object?’ This question is at the heart of collage as the medium exists to deconstruct and rebuild. But what is the purpose of collage if we are not interested in preserving the essence of the original in some way, shape, or form? Does the final object need to reflect its origins? Portals of Theseus presents a variety of collaged portals and worlds created from overlapping source material - maps, science textbooks, and old encyclopedias, to name a few. The exhibition encourages viewers to travel between each little universe and ask themselves ‘After years of learning, loss, and growth, do I remain the same?’”

About the artist: Lares Feliciano (b. 1985 Oakland, CA, USA) is an interdisciplinary artist and cultural worker based in Denver, CO. Feliciano uses animation, installation, and collage to create worlds where marginalized experiences are front and center and all of time exists at once. Her work explores the in-between, layers of diaspora, and the complexity of memory. She holds an M.F.A in Cinema Production from San Francisco State University and a B.A. in Film & American Studies from Smith College. She has completed residencies with RedLine Contemporary Art Center and Grand Canyon National Park and was a participant in the Colorado Creative Industries Change Leader Institute.

Suchitra Mattai - Forecast Form: Art in the Caribbean Diaspora Group Exhibition

“an ocean’s cradle,” 2022, vintage saris, fabric, ghungroo bells

What: Group exhibition
Where: Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago — 220 E Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL, 60611
When: Nov 19, 2022 - Apr 23, 2023

About the exhibition: RedLine Resident Artist Alumni Suchitra Mattai is part of a group show focused on art of the Caribbean Diaspora that is currently on view in Chicago.

“The 1990s were a period of profound social, political, and economic transformation. From the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc to the rise of transnational trade agreements, the decade’s large-scale shifts ushered in an era of international connectivity and social upheaval. In the cultural sector, art exhibitions expanded and turned global, and dialogues around identity, especially by those who have suffered systemic oppression, were featured front and center in cultural debates. The forces of this pivotal decade also had a major effect on the production, circulation, and presentation of art from the Caribbean.

“Taking the 1990s as its cultural backdrop, Forecast Form: Art in the Caribbean Diaspora, 1990s–Today is the first major group exhibition in the United States to envision a new approach to contemporary art in the Caribbean diaspora, foregrounding forms that reveal new modes of thinking about identity and place. It uses the concept of weather and its constantly changing forms as a metaphor to analyze artistic practices connected to the Caribbean, understanding the region as a bellwether for our rapidly shifting times.

Osmosis Solo Show

Installation view of Bloom, 2022. Vintage saris, fabric, feather boas, trim and peacock feather, 80 x 48 in.

What: Solo Exhibition
Where: Kavi Gupta Gallery — 219 N. Elizabeth St. Chicago, IL 60607
When: November 12, 2022 - March 4, 2023

About the exhibition: RedLine Resident Artist Alumni Suchitra Mattai has a solo exhibition in Chicago.

“Thinking about the saltwater ocean migrations that have shaped her family’s cultural and geographic heritage, Mattai has both a scientific and a poetic interest in the process of osmosis, which involves the migration of water molecules from one region to another. Salt is a trigger for the osmotic process, which, in a manner of speaking, is about the emergence of something and the loss of something.

“To create the works in Osmosis Mattai employed salt as both a sculptural medium and a chemical instigator of aesthetic transformation. The material empowers Mattai’s aesthetic expressions of emergence and loss as they relate to the layering of new stories and cultural traditions atop those that already exist.”

About the Artist: “I am a multi-disciplinary artist of Indo-Caribbean descent. My experiences living in several countries and cultural contexts have greatly shaped my artistic practice. Recent and upcoming projects include a commission for the Sharjah Biennial 14, “State of the Art 2020” at Crystal Bridges Museum/the Momentary, a Denver Art Museum and the Biennial of the Americas jointly sponsored installation, a commission for the MCA’s Octopus Initiative, solo exhibitions at the Boise Art Museum of Art (2021), K Contemporary Art (2020), Unit London (2022), Hollis Taggart NYC (2022), and the Center for Visual Arts, Metropolitan State University of Denver (2018) and group exhibitions at Kavi Gupta Gallery (2021), Aicon Gallery (2021), Unit London ( 2021), Pen and Brush NYC (2019), and the San Antonio Museum of Art (2021).

“I received an MFA in painting and drawing and an MA in South Asian art from the University of Pennsylvania, PA. My work has been reviewed in publications and on-line platforms such as Hyperallergic, Document Journal, the Boston Globe, Widewalls, Cultured Magazine, and Wallpaper Magazine and is in the collections of Crystal Bridges Museum, the Denver Art Museum, and the Taylor Art Collection.”
