Victor Escobedo - Mural Unveiling

What: Mural unveiling event
Where: W. 14th Avenue & W. Avendale Drive, Denver, CO, 80205
When: May 7, 1-4pm

More about the event: Join the @LCACdenver for our first mural unveiling along with a community resource fair, including food, live music with Maestro Eric Trujillo, a vaccine clinic, and more.

The LCAC Youth + Artist Program provides professional development for young artists through mentorship opportunities from the best talent in Denver. Inaugural artist Victor J. Escobedo is teaming up with Anthony Garcia Sr. to provide real-world education to 16 year-old Tyson Tafoya, who is interested in a career in the arts. With intergenerational guidance, he is learning everything about the co-creation process of a public work. The program will provide a collaborative on-the-ground learning environment that teaches youth what it takes to become a professional artist.

Brought to the community by The Latino Cultural Arts Center, Denver Foundation, Denver Arts and Venues, Denver Police Department, Denver Fire Department, The Office of Councilwoman Jamie Torres, Denver Health, Servicios de la Raza, and Sunstate Equipment Co.

About the artist: Victor Escobedo’s body of work pays tribute to his experience being born in America to Mexican parents, time spent in the Yucatan jungle listening to his grandmother speak Maya, seeing ancient ruins, exploring Maya sites before tourism, and growing up in Los Angeles in the 80s and 90s. He moved to Denver in 2006 and earned a BFA from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in 2011. Victor is active in his community and uses his unique voice to help others express theirs.

Victor won Best Public Art on a Business in 2018 (Westword Magazine). In 2019 his puppet show, “Ojos en la Selva,” was awarded an INSITE Fund grant through the Andy Warhol Foundation, awarded by RedLine Contemporary Art Center. Also in 2019, he was on the Chicano Muralist Council artist panel, exhibited at three galleries, completed four public murals, and had three performances of “Ojos.” Most recently, he completed the residency at the Denver Children’s Museum, creating clay logoraphs in the style of Mayan hieroglyphs with children and guardians of all ages.

She has lived in New York, New Mexico, attended a boarding school in Italy, joined the Marines and finally settled down in Denver. Not exactly the path one expects, but Norris has made it work. Being a Black, queer, immigrant woman has shaped the way she views and interacts with the world, and it is this experience that she uses in her art. In 2016, Norris experienced a shift from painting pretty pictures to using her artwork to share the stories of the marginalized, providing background information about the things we use, the policies that help and hurt us and the reasons our lives are the way they are.

About the show: “EavesDroppings are the scraps of conversation that have become the foundation of the surveillance economy. Akin to Guano (the bird excrement that became a hot commodity in the 19th century), our chit-chat is part of the torrent of 'Data Exhaust' harvested by tech giants for free, and sold on for $$$$$$$$$! Is your phone spying on you? Yes, it is. Is this a problem? You tell me!

Eavesdroppings presents solutions for audio surveillance, from the 'privacy leaf-blower' to the retro stylings of the 'tin-can telephone', a technology that's coming from the treehouse to your house, and guarantees you won't be secretly recorded by a nefarious app! Come and meet your new best friend Cayla™, Alexa's baby sister, the doll banned in Germany! She's excited to talk to you! Only at Eavesdroppings (because they've taken down her app and she can't talk anywhere else).”

About the Artist: Ben Coleman is a British multi-disciplinary artist residing in Denver, CO. His practice is rooted in sound-making and performance-making, but often plays with other media, including music, text, video and installation. Coleman grew up in theatre and music, forming his first bands in London while studying contemporary performance. Moving to the US in the 2000s, he dedicated some eventful years to musical projects and audio engineering. His practice now encompasses curatorial projects, and frequent collaboration with artists across disciplines, including choreographers, visual artists, and theatre practitioners.
