Hyperallergic Highlights RedLine's Caribbean Resident Alumni

Hyperallergic writer Denise Zubizarreta (aka The Vamp DeVille, who will be leading an artist talk at our upcoming arts & social justice summit 48 Hours: Roots Radical), recently interviewed local artists about the challenges of establishing and maintaining a Caribbean artistic community in Denver.

This conversation included two of RedLine’s fabulous Resident Artist Alumni: Lares Feliciano and Ramon Bónilla!

Lares Feliciano, “QUERER SER” (2020), flat muslin bedsheet, felt letters, digital animation, with mural by Bothe Kretsinger, 81 x 99 inches (all images courtesy the artists).

The article highlights Feliciano’s current project titled Diasporican, which includes locating and interviewing Puerto Ricans across the state for potential collaborations and exhibitions.

The purposeful consequence of colonialism is to spread us far from each other so that we can’t find one another and we are isolated...so, it’s not surprising that it’s difficult, but we are here!
— Lares Feliciano

The article also spotlight’s Bónilla’s minimalist and geometric-focused work, which explores place through landscape and architecture. Bónilla echos the importance of the objective behind Feliciano’s Diasporican project:

Community building among Denver-based Caribbean artists can help with gaining access to opportunities and resources as a group. More importantly, a joint effort can also allow this creative community to establish a noticeable presence in the area that can be used to educate others about identity, art, history, and culture related to the Caribbean experience.
