Carolyn Pooler

I have been with Reach studio since 2012. I was one of the recipients of the RMCAD scholarship through the program and am completing my studies in 2020. I work in various modalities including creative writing and performance art. My work aims to tell a story or uncover sensitive issues. I contrast hard and soft objects with difficult topics to permeate the consciousness of my viewers. Sound and other elements often accompany my work to broaden the audience to unsighted persons as well.

Medium: Acrylic and oil on canvass
Dimensions: 36” x 56’
Painted during Senior Studies at RMCAD under the instruction of Ania Gola Kumor.
The painting offers points of view from several different perspectives. Active with movement the various textures play a large role in the work. The painting began by making a structure of acrylic paint laying in the main images. From that process some forms seemed to emerge from the canvass independently in synchronicity. The cityscape is an illustration of the artists’ daily life. If you look closely you will see shapes provoked by her own memories in the piece. The signature wrought iron fences and blue cobblestones featured in the lower hemisphere of the painting are repeated often in the artists’ body of work. Achieving a glow of light and dramatic shadows were a technical goal when creating this piece, over painting with oils was the method used. The large scale of this work displays the time and commitment Pooler puts into her work.
