Brian Fouhy

He/Him

Working as a photographer, art director, and digital concept creator Fouhy has grown an international  following through a spectrum of imaginative endeavors—from books to websites to real life installations.

One of his first projects—which has become an ongoing journey—is capturing words in the wild scrawled  across pavement, handwritten on walls, or found on signage from around the world. These photographs have been used by Fouhy to create short visual stories, in a style similar to refrigerator magnet poetry and shared through multiple mediums—from the traditional book, to more nostalgic vintage TV’s, and  old slide projectors.

More recently Fouhy has taken his photographic eye into the bathroom to document urinals. This  endeavour captures the often overlooked beauty of these odd objects that perform a very necessary task while also giving a nod to Duchamp and the ready made movement.

Fouhy has compiled these photos into a book and paired them with experiential data surrounding his use of each toilet. As this project continues to evolve Fouhy has taken to displaying the photographs in bathrooms, breaking down the  barrier of where and how art can be viewed and enjoyed.

Beyond photography Fouhy has an ongoing love of the internet which has led to a deep collection of URL’s influenced by culture. The URL’s are often overly specific and to the point, allowing a micro story to come  to life in a single web page.

Such as eddiemurphylaugh.com which evokes the infamous cackle Eddie is so  well known for, to a series of websites that include his name and allow people to drink with Fouhy, invite Fouhy to Thanksgiving, and even allowed people to take a drive with Fouhy from their home computer.

Fouhy gravitates toward a theme of nostalgia and humor, whether it is through an attempt to tap into and document culture, a photograph, a piece of vintage technology, or showing work  in the least expected of locations. Fouhy feels this provides those who view his work to tap into their own feelings and memories in a unique way.

Fouhy currently resides in Denver, Colorado and likes to travel, explore, collect, and wander as extensively  as possible. He has been collecting words for the past 13 years amassing well over 800 photos, a URL count hovering around 40, and amassing over 100 photos of urinals in the past 7 years.
